About RJL and the founder

Rockin’ J Longhorns was founded in the spring of 2004 by Joshua Cashman who at the time was 14 years old. Joshua has not only been around cattle for most of his life, but also around successful businesses. He knows the ins and outs of what makes a business a success or failure. Like with any business you have to have top quality products or in this case top quality cattle and Joshua wasted no time in getting that taken care of. He spent a good part of ‘06 and ‘07 traveling the Untied States in search of the best cattle possible. He quickly added cattle from some of the most well known and experienced longhorn breeders.

Why Longhorns

When I asked Joshua why longhorns he says there are so many reasons he now has for owning them, but the first thing that attracted him to this breed was the prices you could get out of them. Joshua had owned Herford cattle prior to longhorns and was active showing them in 4-H, but when it was time to sell them he would only get market prices at the local sale barn. With longhorns you can get so much more. He said when I first saw the prices people were getting out of their longhorns I knew this was the business for me. He says that the local commercial cattlemen think I’m crazy for owning them, but I just shake my head and chuckle. While they are taking their commercial cattle to the sale barn and getting so much a pound, I’m selling mine for so much more.

Over the last six years that Joshua has been in the longhorn industry he has seen amazing profits made. At a special longhorn sale in TX. called the Legacy, cattle have sold for amazing amounts. The ‘05 high selling cow sold for $81,000, the ‘06 high selling was $150,000 with the second selling for $100,000, the ‘07 high selling was $82,000, the ‘08 high selling was $170,000 with the second selling for $150,000, the ‘09 was $97,000, and we will soon see what the ‘10 high selling will be. Joshua is proud to own a daughter out of one of the high selling cows. While this sale has the best quality cows in the industry and not everyone will get these amounts you can make a large amount of money.

What we look for at RJL

Here at RJL pedigrees are the most important part of our program. We try to not only have the best bulls in the breed in the pedigrees, but also the best cows. We also are having fun stacking bronze horn champion trophies up in a pedigree as well. As you take the time to go through our website, you will see a lot of the same names in the pedigrees. The reason for this is simple, if something is not broken, don’t try to fix it. We have figured out what seems to click and have added as many cows with that bloodline to our herd as possible. You will also see offspring of the best bulls and cows in the breed in our herd as we feel this is a sure way to keep the success going that has made horn measurements jump over the last few years.

Our Cattle

Our cow herd has a lot of Gunman influence in it as we believe Gunman was one of the best bulls that ever lived. Our bulls have been mostly Owen McGill bred. We owned what we feel to have been the best son of Roundup for three years and own the longest horned son of Hunts Command Respect who is also the longest horned bull in the World for total. We are excited about a young Sittin Bull son out of Bar BQ’s Maiden that we recently purchased from G&G Longhorns in VA. He has what it takes to cross back on our Bar B Q and Trail Dust daughters to produce the Champions of tomorrow.
